Spook had sketched a drawing of the downward projecting ice. His sketch made it clear that it was a slab of seven-foot-thick surface ice. It had twisted and rotated so that one corner had been pushed down to within forty feet of the bottom. Spook and I studied the sketch for a few minutes. I marked seven spots across the slab, twenty feet up from the corner.

“If we drill at these points and insert seven charges, it should break the entire corner off,” I said.

“The broken piece should move up and out of the way,” Spook answered.

I brought over Ham and the divers—Harry and Jake. Ham wanted to give Jake more experience and decided to send Harry with him just in case. I walked the divers through their task.

“Any questions?” I asked.

“Any narwhals around here?” Jake asked.

“Not likely,” I answered. “Ice is too thick to break through, and there aren’t any open spots nearby.”

“Well, shit, I was hoping Harry could meet his boyfriend.”

It took the divers two hours to drill the holes and set the C-4 explosive sticks. They wired the sticks in parallel so they would blow simultaneously and fed the wires back to the Egress hatch.

I called the skipper in Control. “We’re set to go.”

“I’ve been watching on the monitor. Your divers are inside the DDC, right?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Very well…initiate!”
